1 CREATIVE CRITICAL REFLECTION

CREATIVE CRITICAL REFLECTION 1: HOW DOES YOUR FILM OPENING USE OR CHALLENGE CONVENTIONS

The film opening began with BBFC certificate which we rated a 15. We decided to rate it a 15 because it contains threat and horror. This would not be suitable for anyone who is at a younger age. After this was shown, we added in two production company logos. These where; Levine Loops and Hill Limitless. Levine Loops is a Yin-Yang symbol (also known as a Tai Chi symbol).  One half of the circle is black, typically representing the yin side; the other is white, for the yang side. A dot of each colour is situated near the centre of the other half. Hill limitless consists of a bold white text and behind is an infinity sign.

The film opening begins with an establishing shot of a pin board of photos of a young school girl (the victim) and MRI photos of her brain. This took place in a deserted and discrete shed in the middle of the woods which set the scene for the audience. From the beginning of the scene, the genre is signalled by the 'mise-en-scene.' This is a term which is used to describe the surrounding of the scene. The lighting was dark throughout the opening but a slight flash light shone onto the pinboard in order for the audience to see what was transpiring. We decided to play orchestral music with a strong driving pulse in complentation of setting the scene to quite dark and mysterious. We added in a voice over of a young women, who plays the scientist. The narrative was elementary and straightforward. The agonist is the scientist and the protagonist is the victim who is shown on the pin board. The victim who is played by Millie Levine shows us an identifiable stereotype as a young school girl. The antagonists where Grace Clare and Ollie Hill, who both played the secret agents. Early on in the opening, we get the impression that Millie is the victim and Ollie is also the stalker who is trying to use the victim for her brain. They have no other relationship as the victim is unaware of the situation. The victim is wearing school uniform throughout the opening and the stalker/agent is wearing a suite and tie. This helps make the two characters easily identifiable for the audiences.

The sound track consists of orchestral music with the driving pulse assists in driving the action and building the apprehension and agitation for the audience. Other sounds used include: camera clicks, a pulse (a heartbeat), analytic sounds of a computer database, a scream, suspenseful music and Lazy by Bruno Mars. The main director (Ollie Hill) <
HOW my FILM OPENING USEs and CHALLENGEs CONVENTIONS by Olivia Davies

I used the app, Pinterest, to identify categories included in my film opening such as identifying social groups and issues. This helped me gain ideas and inspiration.

Using Pinterest boards for inspiration, I were able to create visual ideas such as locations to film at (remote), issues present in today's society (kidnapping) and social groups (teenagers). In the Location board I included isolated venues and dark streets which attach connotations to chilling atmospheres.
My mood boards show films which were simular our own production, eery settings and common issues, all which come together to create our overall theme. We had props in the boards such as scientific brain scans, criminal weaponscrime scene boards and thriller book covers.
Overall, I aimed to create a visual representation of my ideas relating to my production which would help portray the ideas in my film optically.
