2 CREATIVE CRITICAL REFLECTION

MY DISTRIBUTION STRATEGY

MY TARGET AUDIENCE

In order to reach my target audience, I needed to research who they where, what their media needs would be and how to engage them. I also needed to include factors such as: their age, gender and ethnicity. I started by investigating how brands define their audiences, for example, Bauer media NME and Sky.

DISTRIBUTING INDEPENDENT FILMS: BAIT

My film Extraction is a low budget independent film. I looked at how the distribution of Mark Jacobs films where handled. From Baits film website, I learned about which film festivals it was screened at, how it was viewed by audiences and what its main marketing materials where.

The BFI distributes new independent features and classic re-releases across the UK and around the world. From Bait's film website I learned about the film festivals where it was screened, how to view it, what its marketing materials were made up of, it's USPs etc. The BFI promotes films in the UK

The film 'Bait' is a British drama filmed in Cornwall. Edward Rowe plays as a wreckless fisherman who deals with lots of tension during his journey.

The production 'Bait' was screened at the Berlin International Film Festival on the 9th of February 2019. It can be watched on BFI Player, All 4, BFI Player Amazon Channel and Virgin TV Go. When 'Bait' was released its promotion was high and on many different platforms. For example: social media platforms, websites, posters and merchandise.

 DISTRIBUTING BIG BUDGET FILMS

I created a visual collage of the different ways of marketing and advertising a movie. I chose to research 'Little Women'. Little Women is a 2019 American coming-of-age period drama film written and directed by Greta Gerwig.

In my collage I included elements such as: Film posters, the film website, reviews and reports, social media platforms, merchandise suitable for the specific film and trailers.

Film Posters: Film posters would be extremely useful for promoting my film. They are used to visually attract target audiences and members of the public. They help show what is included in the film and can often contain key elements that they think the public must know. For example; their released date and the starring cast members. Film posters are usually very effective because it contains helpful details and grasps audiences. I experimented this by making my own film poster for my film Extraction.

Social Media Platforms: Social media platforms advertise productions for companies. They do this buy revealing either the trailer or short clips which hopefully catches the public eye. For example; Twitter, instagram, facebook and youtube. During the release of 'Little woman' a variation of different social media platforms in order to exhibit the film to the target audience.

News Reports/Reviews: News reports and reviews often come from either newspapers or film boards. They necessitate opinions and comments, these impact people to either watch the film or not watch the film. These reports and reviews can often be found on certain websites and are accessible to the world.

Merchandise: Producing merchandise which relates to the film can help promote it and catch the public eye and interest them in watching their film.

Film Website: The film website is a vital part of film promotion. This is because it attracts the audience as well as informing and promoting the public on what the film is about. For example; on film websites it displays each platform it is available to view on, as well as a category with all the cast and crew on. If in the film there is a big well known star, this is a good way of promoting and showing them off.

Trailers: A trailer is short videos of the movie put together in order to create intrest to the audience. They should captivate different emotion and inspire audiences to watch.
